My Moment with Ringo Starr

August 13th, 2008

I LOVE Ringo Starr! And, we had a moment July 3, 2006. I was relishing the gift of a single concert ticket to see one of the remaining Beatles, an actual member of the Fab-Four, Ringo Starr… and, dear brothers and sisters of rock… I was sitting on the FRONT ROW! Snap!

I’m a Beatles fan, Magical Mystery tour and beyond. You know, ”Dear Prudence”, “I Am The Walrus”, “Across the Universe”.  ”It Don’t Come Easy” is probably my fave of Ringo’s post-Beatles and of those he wrote with the band - - ”With a Little Help From My Friends” & “Yellow Submarine” have lived in my heart from childhood.

During the concert Ringo was chatting to the crowd, working his way to the front of the stage and announced he was celebrating his birthday that week. I said to myself… “Myself, you are on the FRONT ROW! Give him something!!” All I had on me to spare the iconic, heartful rock legend was one of my own designs on a belt buckle… It was my “Happiness” buckle.  I grabbed for my jeans and ripped that buckle right off my belt strap.  My feet took me straight to the stage, and I placed the buckle right in front of his Ringo Starr’s toes… well, as far in as I could reach… I looked up and there he was so I said ”Happy Birthday, Ringo!”  I promise you, he was so close - Ringo was RIGHT THERE!  He leaned over to pick up my offering & I said “I MADE IT!”…. And, In his perfect Liverpool dialect Ringo Starr said to me - on his microphone: “You made it, love?!” (and he threw me a peace sign!)

When he got back to his drums -God as my witness- he looked right at me and threw me another set of his air-hovering fingers perched in that perfect peace w/ a distinct head nod, a half smile, and held my gaze for what must have been (like omgosh) 3 seconds.  The person next to me hit my arm and I returned my fully outstretched arm with my best finger positioning in a full-tilt yet rock-steady peace sign - right back at you, Ringo, baby! I love Ringo with all my heart for who he is and for that briefly shared moment!!!

It’s common knowledge Ringo is all about throwing… what I call… “peace fingers”. In a tribute to the experience and to Ringo, I created ”Peace In Me” with ‘peace fingers’.  It evolved to take the shape as a cool t-shirt and a buckle design.

In my heart our ‘good old’  (retired design) Happiness buckle holds a special spot for my historic moment with a Beatle, which in my little life, meant a lot more to me than Ringo may ever know. Peace and love, Ringo!

*As an aside, to my full embarassment, (and anyone who sells their own wares may relate), the buckle that I put on stage for Ringo Starr had my price tag still stuck on the back.  OH, Dear Prudence!!

*Of special note, during Chicago Market a passerby stopped and looked at our “Peace In Me” buckle and said, “Huh, looks just like something you might see on the cover of an old Beatles album!” And, to this day, that compliment ranks among the greatest ever received from a complete stranger.

“Knowing that love is to share….” XO, Ringo… Peace & Love… Jo Dee

Free to Be

August 13th, 2008

“Free to Be” is about more than celebrating the 4th of July…  It’s an election year and this American Flag is a reminder we’ve the right to individually express ourselves. So, pull a symbolic tee over your big, beating heart, put on your flip flops and jeans, and go to the polls and pull your vote. During the rest of your days, whereever you may be, create some down time for your spirit - throw a blanket under the big, beautiful sky, put your head on your friend’s lap, listen to some tunes, and take in some fireflies. Celebrate life just because every day you’re “Free to Be!”, baby!

Show and Tell: Relating to Ad Making

August 13th, 2008

Do you ever mess with your own images so much you can no longer tell if you’ve created something cool or just a gigantic mess? As the artist of my company, I’m the ‘go-to’ for ad creating and there’s a huge sense of self-burdening responsibility for the ad art to: ‘do’ well, reflect well on everyone who has an investment, as well as maintain the original intent - to uplift and connect.  It can be a painful process… especially for someone engrossed in the art itself.  I can move the smallest image to the right, no to the left, no try up, down, down, down… until my toes tingle as well as my numb backside.  I will ache… but, like a mad scientist, unable to stop.  And, God forbid the short lead or quick deadline.  Oh, shazam!

No doubt it would be even more difficult to not be the one creating the ads, as there’s an absolute certainty noone would take the same doting care, as if it’s their own appendage, or give the same meditation to the project while away from a piece…  Of course some say it’s the ultimate self-absorbsion.  I’m not blind to that… but, it feels like the message is meant for someone in particular, designees of the universe who unawaringly (is that a word?) await.  And, that’s an important part of my soul’s passion and seems deserving of the cost of heart and time… and sleeping toes.  I couldn’t possibly work this hard doing something I didn’t care for so much.

So, returning to the matter at hand, when does one single image suffice in giving enough reflection of your entire line and when is a complilation of collage just too much?  I do recognize, as a collage artist, I love getting lost in the layers, hints of images, and pops of color.  On the other hand, I treasure simplicity done well too.

I suppose, in the end, we all create whatever it is we create - life, love, music, dinner, art (kraft or craft, ha!)- as it’s that which we simply must do - and we keep putting it out there… offering our works, as an extention of our hand, in hopes of connecting with the other… to share our perceived gifts.  As for me, I delight when the connection is made manifest, and right there my gratitude for some small ability to tune into answering the call of my heart consumes me… I’m in awe, not only for the universe’s micaculous validation before me in the events that unfold bringing to form a situation or person who has found something self-personifying in the art, but also for the huge feeling of loving creating so much that I am blessed with the feeling of “I have to do this… and I want to do this”…  And, if we’re doing that, aren’t we giving all?  Well, it may not be worth a set dollar value, but it’s certainly worth walking this earth in gratitude, delight, & a sense of purpose.

Well, call it procrastination; but, I did not mean to write so much.  Blogging is a trip. Thanks for joining me on the adventure… whoever and whereever you are.

Be the observer

August 12th, 2008

These photos were taken at my boyfriend’s parent’s lake house in Texas.  It was absolutely as relaxing as it looks.  As the weekend closed and we were saying our goodbyes the little flying squirel peaked out of its cabana in the tree.  I was overjoyed to snap this photo as he watched to oversee our departure. (The red gerber is the corner is from the front of my house… it’s the bloom from the picture Monday entitled “A Week of Promise.”  Gorgeous! Isn’t life beautiful?!

Cat Imitating Cat

August 11th, 2008

Blessed and grateful for the good-natured creatures that share my craft-cabin. Here Jacques amuses with his alter-ego personification… ”Cat-Man.”  Well, I guess maybe you had to be there…?

Rhapsody in Ribbon

August 11th, 2008

I admit it… I’m addicted to ribbon.  I literally have a visceral, mouth-watering, eye-dilating response to the colors and textures combining… (Same for great cookies but that’s another post).

As a rule of thumb, encouraging someone with an addiction isn’t a good idea.  And, one day before our tour of markets were to begin,  Colleen and I were discussing the display when she suggested that I buy some ribbon to tie on our hangers to show our t-shirts… “You know,” she said, “the way you do ribbons… Just put a few ribbons on a couple of hangers.”  I could feel the smile run across my face as I envisioned the mounds of colors as I went tripping through the aisles of the hobby store…

My addiction soon became apparent as Colleen began to tussle with metal hooks tangling in loops of gathered bows while working with customers.  And, my duty became spending morning moments prior to each day’s market entranced in the reworking and tending my lovely stands of color - - in the delight of my stupor!

Olympic Tribute & Celebrating the Striving Spirit

August 8th, 2008

Thoughts behind the work:  Artwork began for my “Joy from Effort” t-shirt design with these 2008 Summer Olympics in mind.  As I worked what rose up for me was why we connect with these amazing athletes.  There’s a saying, “God rests in reason and moves in passion.”  Our hearts may dictate a purpose but determination takes passion.  From there it’s about the desire to rise above our own limits.  When we watch Olympians we witness the overcoming of obstacles and it lifts our own limitations, increasing possibilities for our own capabilities.  Connecting with another’s dream frees us to attempt more in our own lives. Ultimately, it’s about going for it, whatever it may be for you personally.

Joy from Effort is about participating and enjoying the experiences along the way.  That’s something we can all relate to.  When we achieve small goals along the way, it fuels our passion. The hidden beauty lies in the unforeseen gifts - the people, experiences, and self-knowledge acquired along the way.  All of these aspects recharge our fearless desire to overcome obstacles and heroically persevere the day to day.

Naturally, as an artist, it’s my hope that something in the work resonates with its viewer.  I would love for the observer or t-shirt wearer to feel somehow empowered in their own plight.  If you have a story to share about your striving spirit, it can bring you a free “Joy from Effort” t-shirt from Cutting-Up… Hope you’ll participate boldly and surrender - no matter your direction today.  What’s your story?  Tell me here on the blog or e:mail your thoughts to: www.info@cutting-up.com
