Introducing Huckleberry Finn - aka: A Texas Tail
INTRODUCTIONS PLEASE:
This is Huckleberry Finn, my beautiful fur-wrapped angel. I call him ”Huck” for short, naturally. Huck found me in 2005, in a beautiful way and amidst the seriously struggling early days of artistry-entrepreneurship.
BROKE DOWN:
On a beautiful Texas afternoon in April, the clutch on my little 1990 BMW ’vent ker-put’… again. It’s understandable, driving a car with over 260,000 miles, there would be hazards. So, Randy, my tow-truck driver was a contact on my cell’s speed dial.
ENTER RANDY, stage left:
Randy, whom I adore, is a quentisential tow-truck-driver-stereotype: big man, long pony tail, gruffy voice, Marlboro lights, his friend is a bail-bondsmen… I love characters who make life beautifully gritty in their own personal ways and style and was always happy to see Randy. On this fated day Randy had a stop to make on the way to Lenny’s shop. (Lenny is my mechanic and dear friend, who I’ve known since the 6th grade.)
DOG DREAMS:
As Randy pulled away with the bimmer on board, I started rambling: I was working from home more and was ready for a dog. “It’s time for me to have a dog and I want a dog that needs me as much as I need him.” I clearly remember saying that “I’ve been talking to God and I know He’ll bring me the right dog when He’s ready.” I remember saying these words vividly because as those words were audible, I had the clear inner conversation with myself that went “Why am I telling Randy, my tow truck driver, that God will bring me a dog? This guy is going to think I’m crazy.”
WHAT A GAS:
Other than some raspy grunts acknowledging he was ‘listening’, Randy didn’t say much about my banter as he pulled into the gas station to pump his rig with petrol. I’m sitting in the passenger seat’s nest, way up high, windows down, and an attendant walks right by the truck with a happy little puppy at her feet. I couldn’t help my response… “oohhhh, what a CUTE puppy!!!” To which she responded, “He’s been left here. He needs someone. Do you want him?” I gazed back at Randy pumping gas as I climbed out of his big-rig & could hear his drawl “OH MY GAWD! (we are in Texas) I don’t freaking believe this!”
DRAMATIC PAWS:
The Texas-sized station was full of customers and everyone seemed to hold their gaze in the direction of the puppy… and me. The attendant said “He’s sick, I think that’s why noone will take him.” The little puppy and eye had our eyes locked on each other. He sat on his little puppy buns and looked up at me. I kneeled down and sat with my feet under me and this little puppy put his little black paw, dappled in white, on my knee… and we fell in love.
WHAT’S IN A NAME?:
My new little puppy was sick and covered in mange; but, he healed with lots of trips to the vet. I vowed the only thing he would die from, with me, at this time, would be bleach inhilation due to the constant sanitizing of my concrete studio floors. Deciding he had lots of adventures without me already in his little life, I named him Huckleberry Finn. And, to this day, I tell Huck the dapples on his paws are where the angels kissed him… on the way out of heaven… because they didn’t want him to go.
Huck as a pup: “Leaf It, It’s Fine.“
